Fabric Paint Shirt Stencil Using Vinyl

I opted to use spray paint but you can easily use a foam brush and fabric paint.

Place thick paper or cardboard inside the shirt to prevent bleeding. Apply spray paint to t shirt. Once satisfied with the shirt design i removed the vinyl see the below picture for examples. You can use just fabric paint the glitter is optional.

If you use regular spray paint your shirt will be too stiff. Using paper or cardboard mask off the t shirt so only the stencil in visible. Spray lightly and it might take a couple of passes. In this tutorial i will be using the seahorse design which can be found here.

I use the paper backing from the vinyl or contact paper since it s always the perfect size. Don t forget to put something behind your fabric unless you don t mind getting paint on your table. I cut a vinyl stencil and applied it to the shirt. I use fabric paint and a stiff stenciling brush.

Using spray adhesive to a stencil. Stencil the area on the fabric by starting on the outer edge of the design and work in. I m using this 12 x 6 wood board that came pre hung with a rope but you can use any board that has a flat surface. I traced around the stencil and then removed the vinyl once finished.

Once you have printed your stencil use masking tape or transfer tape to hold everything in place. One quick layer will do the trick. Don t put too much on. Allow the paint to dry for 15 minutes before removing the.

In this tutorial i use fabric paint fabric glitter and fabric glue. Weed out the areas you don t want where the paint needs to penetrate using a hook or probe tool. Try to do even strokes around the stencil. Carefully smooth the vinyl stencil on the fabric you wish to print we chose t shirts and gently lift away the masking or transfer tape.

Put a piece of cardboard in between the front and back shirt layers to prevent paint bleeding. Once the stencil is securely placed on the t shirt you can start spraying.
